Mines Saint-Etienne as a member of the IMT – Institut Mines Telecom, has been clearly identified as an active actor in the domain of industry 4.0. Among the ongoing actions are the ones led by Fayol Institute. Industrial transition and industry 4.0 are a major part of the Fayol strategy. This was vouched for by several initiatives including a master and demonstration platform for industry 4.0. The master is titled Management of the Industrial Transition (coordinated by K. Medini) and is intended for supporting companies deal with the emerging opportunities and risks of industry 4.0. The learning process is enhanced by a demonstration platform established at Fayol Institute aiming at knowledge transfer in the domain of the industry 4.0. Variety and complexity management are partly dealt with in these initiatives. Besides, the research in this domain at Fayol Institute is also supported by ongoing PhDs.

Department of Materials and Production is a wide-ranging research and educational environment with a mission of meeting future demands for new materials and production systems by directing the entire value chain, from basic material understanding, materials’ applications in mechanical constructions, to industrial production and management. As a particular research focus, the department concentrates on “industry 4.0” and smart manufacturing topics such as digitalization of manufacturing and value chains, smart collaborative technologies and automation, system integration, modularity, platforms, reconfigurability, etc. Among these initiatives, the AAU smart lab is particularly known as an industry 4.0 demonstrator for industrial partners, research and teaching activities, which has led the department to be recognized as a Industry 4.0 leader and hub in Scandinavia.

BIBA is affiliated to the University of Bremen and focuses on interdisciplinary research and teaching for production and logistics topics. As a Digital Innovation Hub, BIBA has been exploring what is understood today as ‘Industry 4.0’ – the technological and organisational challenges and opportunities caused by digitalisation for many years. Hosting the ‘Industry 4.0 Competence Centre for SMEs’ and an ‘Industry 4.0 Test Environment for SMEs’, BIBA offers SMEs support in increasing their digitization skills and to test and optimize product and business ideas. The IoTFabLab at BIBA provides all the resources necessary for work in industrial and research projects as well as in teaching: from RFID, sensors and wearable systems to a comprehensive IT infrastructure for the collection, processing and visualization of data.

Fraunhofer IAO supplies systematic methods for new service launches or for making existing service portfolios more efficient and customer-friendly. Research projects are conducted in close collaboration with small and medium-sized companies and industrial corporations under direct contracts. The Fraunhofer IAO participates in publicly funded research programs of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, in programs of the European Union, as well as in programs funded by the Land of Baden-Württemberg. Fraunhofer IAO has lab to testing service (ServLab). Companies can deliberate over and test out their service products at all stages.
